Yoto Make Your Own cards: a family guide

How Muslim families use Make Your Own Yoto cards, starting with a grandparent's recorded du'as, and how to label cards a child can recognise.

Make Your Own cards are blank Yoto cards that you link to any audio you like. For a Muslim family they're the simplest way to give a child the recitation, du'as and stories you trust, in a form they can pick up and play by themselves.

What families put on them

The card we'd start with is a grandparent's du'as. Ask them to record the du'as they taught you, the ones for waking up, eating and going to sleep. If you add them to your Yoto family account, they can record straight into the app and the recordings turn up on your phone, ready to link to a card. Years from now, that card will mean more than anything you could buy.

A card for the surah your child is learning comes a close second. Put one surah on each track, so your child can press play again to hear it twice, and add the next surah when they're ready. Our guide to putting Qur'an on a Yoto card has the steps.

After that, families tend to make a bedtime card, usually a short set of evening du'as followed by a calm recitation that's the same every night, and a card for the car with stories and voice-only nasheeds. Some parents record a card in their own voice as well, reading a favourite story or just saying goodnight.

Setting one up

In the Yoto app, make a playlist under Make Your Own and add your audio. A card holds up to 100 tracks. Then open the playlist, tap Link to card, and put a blank card in the player. Keep the player on Wi‑Fi and charging while it downloads, and after that it plays anywhere. You can change what's on a card whenever you like, so a "surah I'm learning" card can grow with your child.

Children choose by picture long before they can read, so give each card something they'll know at a glance. A sticker works, or a drawing, or a different colour for each kind of card. Older children like decorating their own, and they tend to look after them better when they have.

If you'd rather start with something ready, everything on this site has been checked against our standard, and some packs go into your Yoto library in one tap. Browse by age to find a first card.
